Obituary of Daniel Price Summerlin
Please share a memory of Daniel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Daniel Price Summerlin passed away Sunday, July 30 - going to glory after a hard fought battle with cancer. He is now at peace with his beloved brother Reuben Summerlin, step-father Ron Cohen and many, many loved ones.
Born January 9, 1969 in Berea, Kentucky, Dan is survived by his wife Scottie; his twin boys Jack and Jake; his parents Phil and Aline Summerlin of Signal Mountain; and Sherry Summerlin of Houston, TX; his brothers Josh Summerlin (Sharon) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; Alex Cohen (Elizabeth) of Park City, UT and sister-in-law Diana Summerlin of Chattanooga. Dan is also survived by his in-laws, Franklin & Melinda Goodman of Winchester, and Dan Goodman and Chreyl Goodman Reid (Justin) of Meridian, MS. Dan is survived by 11 nieces and nephews, a large extended family, and a host of friends and colleagues.
After graduating from Red Bank High in 1987 and the University of Tennessee in 1992, Dan served in marketing roles at Croxall & Associates, The Johnson Group, Synthetic Industries & Unum. Dan recently retired as Director of Corporate Relations at CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. The support of CBL during Dan's illness proved they weren't just his employer, they were family.
A person of deep and generous faith, Dan was a member of First Christian Church Chattanooga and served as Congregation President, Pastoral Search Committee Chair, Elder, Deacon, Youth Children's Church teacher and was a longtime Sunday School leader for a group of men from the Orange Grove Center. Dan also helped coach the FCC Softball Team along with many other work and rec softball teams through the years. A bone break during a throw to home in a church softball game led to his cancer diagnosis.
Dan loved youth sports, coaching his sons and their friends and volunteering for baseball, basketball and football youth leagues. He was terrific with kids and served in a number of roles with Signal Mountain Youth Baseball and Hixson Youth Athletic Association. Dan loved watching and playing sports and participating in family bowl pools for College Bowl Games and March Madness, along with Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football leagues with friends and loved ones.
His servant heart led him to always cheer for the underdog and support those who needed him. Dan was a past Board President of First Things First, loved his "little brother” from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Louie from age 8 to current day and volunteered for United Way of Greater Chattanooga, Siskin Children's Institute, Boy Scouts of America and others. He could always be counted on to take in stray cats, move turtles out of the middle of the road, pick up trash and recycle it.
Dan was great at imitations and telling stories. He loved sharing with Jack, Jake, Leah, Ike, Evan & Grayson about growing up with brothers and all their mischievous adventures, including the trouble three preachers’ kids could get into unsupervised at church and in the pew. Dan shared his love of music with Jack and Jake and enjoyed playing his saxophone with them.
Spending time with loved ones at family reunions in Texas, Alabama and Idaho and annual family beach trips were among Dan's favorite things. Dan spent free time taking family trips with Scottie, Jack and Jake with the goal of visiting all 50 states. They most recently celebrated Christmas in Hawaii.
The Service will be at noon on Tuesday, August 1 with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at First Christian Church, located at 650 McCallie Avenue. Burial will immediately follow at the Chattanooga Memorial Park "Duck Pond" Cemetery in Red Bank, a place where Dan and Scottie would take the boys to feed the ducks when they were young and where Jack and Jake released their pet turtle to live in the wild.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Public Education Foundation of Chattanooga/Hamilton County, the Mountain Education Foundation of Signal Mountain, or your favorite education charity to help inspire the next generation of oncology researchers to #ThrowOutCancer. Thank you #TeamDan.
