Obituary of James Patrick Dilworth

Dr. James Patrick Dilworth, age 62, died August 10, 2020 peacefully at his home surrounded by family following a year long battle of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Dr. Dilworth is survived by his loving wife, Kate, his three adoring children and son-in law, Mia, Robert, Liz Dilworth (Jack) McFadden, his two younger sisters and brother-in-law, Betsy Dilworth and Sean and Dr. James Thompson. Also surviving are his mother, Marilyn Dilworth, and his nephews, Clay and Patrick Thompson, Reg Buzzell( Mary Allison) Michael Lykes, Joseph Lykes, Johnson Lykes and Auguste Lykes, niece Cason Buzzell ( Robby) and countless dear friends from childhood, college and beyond. Dr. Dilworth was born March 26, 1958 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Joseph James Dilworth and his loving mother, Marilyn Behrens Dilworth. From Cincinnati, the Dilworth's moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Dr. Dilworth attended St. Louis School and Christian Brothers High School. Dr. Dilworth attended the University of the South, where he graduated with honors earning a bachelor of science in chemistry. While at Sewanee, Pat was President of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, member of the student fire department, Highlanders, and belonged to several other honorary clubs. After graduating from the University of the South, Pat went on to begin his education in medicine at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. It was in Memphis where he met his loving and devoted wife, Kate Beasley. Pat and Kate soon married in 1985 and began their journey in love and life. His medical training began as a 2 year general surgery resident at Erlanger Hospital. From there, he was awarded the Tulane Urology Research Fellowship and continued his training in Rochester, Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic in a five year urology residency program. In 1994, Dr. Dilworth and his family moved back to Kate's hometown, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Dr. Dilworth would go on to begin Chattanooga Urological Associates at Memorial Hospital with his close friend and partner, Dr. Sam Currin, later to be joined by Dr. Ed Henson, Dr. Will Young, Dr. Jeff Mullins and Dr. Mark Currin. During his 26 year career at Memorial, he served as Chief of Surgery and was well-respected by all of his colleagues. Dr. Dilworth was a loving husband, devoted father and respected physician. He loved his family and friends, was an avid music fan and sports enthusiast. He enjoyed traveling, the camaraderie of friends and delighted many with his razor sharp wit. A graveside memorial service will be held outdoors at Forest Hills Cemetery on Friday, August 14, 2020 at 10AM. The family requests that those attending wear masks.
