Met Bobby after retirement when I moved to Chattanooga and lived a few blocks away. Fellow golfer, MOAA member and constant lunch buddy. Had lunch with Bobby on August 2 and we talked about our Supply Corps experiences. He always liked to introduce me as his father. Will miss you shipmate. You were a great friend.

The world has lost a good man, and I have lost a good friend --- since first grade. So long Bobby. Your eternal enthusiasm and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

I was saddened to learn of Bobby's passing this week. I was a very young Ensign at NAVCHAPGRU when I met then LCDR Crates who was doing an Active Duty week with his Reserve Cargo Handling Battalion. As Bobby was from just across the border from my state of Georgia (actually, I think Tennessee stole Lookout Mountain from Georgia) we enjoyed sharing our "Southerness" for decades. We stayed in close contact throughout our careers, served on the Supply Corps Foundation together, and never lost our love for the Navy's only cargo handlers. It was an honor and privilege to know and serve with him. He will be missed by all who came in contact with that smiling face.

On behalf of my late husband, RADM Robert C. Stack, SC, USNR (retired), I extend sympathy and condolences to the family of RADM Robert C. Crates, SC, USNR (retired). Over the span of 40-plus years, Bob and Bobby worked tirelessly together both in defense of our country and in pursuit of civilian activities and pleasures. I have no doubt that there was quite an arrival ceremony last weekend as Bobby was “piped aboard” with all the military bells and flourishes befitting this distinguished two-star Admiral.
Comrades together again.

Bobby, you were a lifelong friend since our Ensign day’s in Norfolk. And it was a personal and personal privilege to continue our friendship through all those years. I will always appreciate your assistance in our logistics efforts during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Rest easy shipmate, we have the watch.
Don Ho.
