Obituary of Caroline Humphreys Brown

Please share a memory of Caroline to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Caroline Humphreys Brown, 91, passed away on August 9, 2018. She was born on August 23, 1926 in Chattanooga to Harold and Marie Humphreys. She graduated from Chattanooga City High School and Westminister Choir College in Princeton, NJ.

Caroline is perhaps best known for starting the Chattanooga Boys Choir in 1954. At the same time she directed the Baylor Glee Club as the first female professor. After moving to Dalton with her husband, Jack and children, her musical talents expanded to direct the Daltones and produce full operas at the Wink Theatre. Her home was always filled with music! She loved to play the piano as Jack sang along.

Endlessly hospitable, Caroline and Jack opened their home to weekly Life group meetings which had a lasting impact on many young men and women. The Bible Coffees which met in her kitchen grew into Fellowship Bible Church.

Other creative endeavors Caroline pursued included opening Brown’s Antiques and Interiors in Dalton and serving on the founding committee for the Creative Arts Guild. Her last major project was moving a 19th century log house from Canada where she and Jack resided in their last happy years. This beloved woman of exceptional vibrancy and character will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Thomas Jackson Brown; her parents, Harold and Marie Humphreys; brother, Gilbert Humphreys. She is survived by her loving children, Caroline Brown Hudson (Steve); sons, Thomas Jackson Brown Jr. (Janet), Harold Humphreys Brown (Leigh Ann), and David Rogers Brown (Jennifer); nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday, August 13 at First Baptist Church, 7611 Nashville St., Ringgold, GA at 10 AM. The funeral service at 11 AM will be followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A brief graveside service will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery in St. Elmo at 2:15 PM.

Memorial contributions may be sent to The Brown Humphreys Scholarship Fund at Covenant Theological Seminary, 12330 Conway Road, St. Louis, MO 63141 or to the Chattanooga Boys Choir.
