Nancy Varnell Buttram, 66, of Hixson, TN died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 24, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born in Knoxville, TN, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Sam N. Varnell. She graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1969. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Mark and infant son Todd. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Alex Buttram, two children and their spouses, Brad and Raph Buttram of Kennesaw, GA, Amy and Hovig Yacoubian of Chattanooga, TN; one sister and family, Beth and Phil Puckett of Marietta, GA, Andy Puckett of Marietta, GA, Kate, Matt and Sam Rice of Calhoun, GA and Becky, Andrew and Hannah Phelps of Alpharetta, GA. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Nancy’s memory to the Capital Fund Campaign, Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343 or to the Mark Varnell Scholarship Fund, Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA 24327. The Reverends Reed Shell and Randy Martin will officiate a celebration of life service at Hixson United Methodist, Monday October 28th at 7:00 PM, where Nancy was an active member for 31 years. Visitation will precede the service from 4:00 – 6:30 PM in the church fellowship hall.
