Goodbye my Dearest Friend I still recall that hot summers evening of August 2002. Patrick Moates was installing a CD player in my car and low and behold Michael Matthews pulled up in his bright yellow truck. After the installation of the CD player, Mike, Patrick, and I talked for a few and then I headed out. The very next day Patrick notified me that Mike wanted my number. I accepted the invitation; an invitation that would last 10 years. Not only was Mike my companion, but he was indeed my best friend. I knew I could count on him for anything. His sense of humor and sharp wit made the day warmer. His hugs and kisses comforted a dark night. His charming intelligence shined and was sought by many. He made people happy. However, he yearned for that happiness himself. The true happiness he so hoped for he feels now in the presents of our lord. He always spoke about how the name Michael meant who is like God. He can now attest if that is true. He loved working on his classic 1971 Dodge Challenger named Betty. Betty was his pride and joy. I can€™t count the numerous times we had various car parts strolled throughout our home. He always knew how OCD I was and would often complain when I would hide them. However, I learned a lesson or two about rocker arms, pistons, and fly wheels. We often talked about taking the car to the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge when he finished his hemi engine. That day never came. Besides restoring classic cars, Mike was a movie buff. He had favorites like Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, and The Sand Lot. He would watch movies as a way to motivate himself. Television shows were also his forte. Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men, and Sons of Anarchy just scratch the surface of the many television series that he viewed. When he found out he wasn€™t going to be on this Earth much longer his first words to me were, €œNo more Walking Dead!€ Zombie films and t.v. series were definitely his niche. He even went as far as making a bug out bag with various items to prepare for the end of the world. It is heartbreaking that his world came to an end early. He is now our guardian angel watching over and protecting us. Michael, your soul struggled to find the peace and happiness that you truly needed and wanted. I tried my best to help you gain that harmonious life. Although you may of not of found it here on Earth, I am sure you are glowing in Heaven. You opened my eyes to so much and for that I thank you. There will not be a day that goes by that I won€™t think of you. I just wish our time spent together could have been extended. We both had many dreams and goals for the future. I am going to go forth and live out my goals and see what life now has to offer. Your encouraging words of, €œI hope it works out for you€ will be embedded in my mind permanently. I love you today, tomorrow, and forever. With all my love, goodbye my dearest friend.

Mike marched to the beat of a different drummer. Though he had little to say, he was blessed with a razor-sharp wit;and his writing reflected deeper insights on world conditions than many of us realised. Of course we'll miss him, but he will remain in our fondest memory.

Mike was a terrific guy who will be much missed. I'll treasure the great memories I have of him: cruising around in high school in his RX-7 with his industrial metal music blasting through the speakers; his visit to Connecticut/New York where he dragged me around to all the burger joints recommended by his beloved TV chefs; watching The Sopranos and The West Wing together; and his perfect ability to cut to the heart of a situation with an incisive wisecrack. My thoughts go out to all of Mike's family during this terrible time.
