I have often thought about Dr. Richards, and we were talking about him the other day among colleagues at Hixson High School. He was my absolute favorite professor at UTC and I have very fond, but crazy, memories of his teachings. He smacked me with a ruler one day when I asked him if I could use my paper from Hamlet for another class the next semester. He brought all of our papers back with bullet holes burnt into them where he used them at the firing range. He smacked a cup of soda across the room and told us he taught with fear so we could get out if we didn't like it (of course NO ONE moved!) and set off some Black Cats in the garbage can when we weren't paying attention. Now as I teach Macbeth and Beowulf to my 12th graders with my Storm Trooper spatula at my side to curb foul behaviors, I look to heaven and know that he is with his son which he lost during one of our semesters of learning. I love my job because of him and can only hope to instill as much love for literature to my students as he did to us.

Mike was my faculty advisor during my undergraduate years at UTC. He was accomplished, knowledgeable, inspirational, and 100% unique. I still look back fondly on time spent in his office talking about Shakespeare, women, and life in general. The world is a little dimmer with his passing, a and certainly a lot less interesting. God bless him, and my condolences to his family. Bryan Chambers B.A. English, UTC, 1988

I had the pleasure of working onstage with Mike in Bus Stop at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. He was an amazing actor and a fascinating man. We had most of one act to sit in the green room and talk - Mike told wonderful stories of his adventures, his family, and his work. He will be missed by many. I feel honored to have known him. My condolences to the family. Patti Gross

Dr. Richards was my adviser as an undergraduate. He was a wonderful teacher. I studied Paradise Lost by Milton with him. It was one of the best experiences I had as a student. Currently, I teach middle school English. His influence is still with me in the classroom. I'm truly saddened by his lost. Thoughts and prayers to friends and family.

My condolences to the family. Dr. Richards was my professor for 5 of my classes when I was an English major in the late 80's/early 90's. I learned to love Shakespeare and Donne because of his classes, and I obviously kept coming back for more. His passion for literature and life was unmatched. He is one of the reasons I am teacher today. Every day I try to pass on his love for language to my students.

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Dr. Mike Richards. I had the honor of taking several classes with Dr. Richards in the early 90s. He was bar none, my favorite college professor. He was such a character, hilarious and a little intimidating at times. ( Like many others, I received a few poorly written essays back with shotgun holes in them.) He was gruff, but kind. He challenged me in a whole new way and really made me think for myself. He made Shakespeare, Donne and even Chaucer exciting and fun. (No small feat if you've ever read Chaucer). You could tell he really loved to teach and he did it so, so well. My friends and I have always remembered him fondly over the years and always will. R.I.P Mike, you were just the best.

Dr. Richards was my freshman English instructor in the spring of 1970, the very best instructor I ever had in any class, EVER!! His enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject was outstanding as he guided his students to study poetry. He encouraged us all to investigate and, moreover, enjoy the subject and rise up to do our best. RIP, Dr. Richards and thank you for such great memories of my freshman year. My sympathies to his family and close friends.

Kent & I first met Mike in 2008. We had begun construction of our home on Stidman Gap Road. Mike was the first member of the immediate neighborhood that greeted us. I was always confident that he was keeping an eye on all visitors and activity on "our" road. He advised me on plantings for our specific climate…much different from our previous home in Macon, GA. We have fond memories of some very special times with Mike & Julie and have missed them dearly since they moved from Stidman Gap. Mike will always have a special place in our memory and hearts!! Much love to Julie and his family, Kent and Susan Baldschun

Dr. Richards was one of my first professors at UTC in 1994. I loved his class - I already loved Shakespeare, but going to his class was like going to a performance. Shakespeare rolled off of him and he quoted it to open our eyes to interpretation. And though at times he was terrifying to a sheltered 18 year old, he fanned the flame of literature that is still deep in my soul. Condolences to his family. Courtney Cochran, BFA Graphic Design
