Dorothy prepared me to take over SMMS social studies classes when she retired. We met several times so that I would be fully prepared. She loved those students and only wanted the best for them. I really tried to make her proud and carry on the important cause of educating our children.

Mrs Leader, how she was loved! I was lucky enough to have her during 4th and 5th grades at Thrasher. She went to Japan one year; when she returned she brought little candies/snacks for us to try (my 1st taste of seaweed!). She also taught us about kimonos and let us make dragons for an arts and craft activity. I was so shy, but Mrs Leader knew how to bring out the spirit inside. I'll always remember this beautiful, spirited teacher and woman. Best wishes on the other side, Mrs Leader. Love to you and your family.

When I attended elementary school, I was fortunate to have Ms. Leader for 5th grade. She was indeed a mentor to her students and that little lady could sure get control of a rowdy class faster than any other teacher there. If she walked into a mildly rowdy class, she would say "y'all are through, finished and done", and immediate compliance was achieved! She guided me through my first science fair project which allowed hatch chickens in a home made incubator in the classroom. Other classes got to observe the chicks hatching.. It is with with a sad heart that I recount those many happy memories. Eric Woerner

Mrs. Leader, an endearing lady who touched the lives of many, including my son, Michael Geer II who was the only African American student at Thrasher Elementary during his 5th grade year. She was compassionate and helped him to excel in all his subjects as well as, mentor him when he began his teaching career at Battle Academy. We are truly blessed to have known such a dear lady! Mrs. Leader was one of those truly great teachers. I have great memories of She and Momita. I am blessed to have been able to call her neighbor, friend, and teacher. She always believed in me, and never spared discipline to get get out of me what she knew I was capable of. I loved her dearly. She will be truly missed, but always remembered. Love, Russ Russell

Dorothy Leader enriched the lives of our two girls lucky enough to have her for a teacher, but she also enriched our family's lives with her joy in learning and her enthusiasm for any child, including the two boys that followed our girls. Her wonderful smile, seen in this picture, always seemed to me to indicate her thrill for the wonders that would occur that day. That attitude is contagious, and we absorbed it, all of us. Her ability to reach each child was remarkable, instilling a love of math and problem solving in one of our children while unleashing the creative energy of the other. We all loved Dorothy, and we are just six of the hundreds of people on Signal Mountain that this sprightly, dignified, and endearing lady touched.

What an amazing lady and teacher!!! She certainly did allow and encourage each student to bloom where they were planted! She encouraged Chris to be the best academic student he could be and allowed him to develop a keen sense of humor, always laughing at his jokes and making him feel that humor was a big part of life! She did that for every student, finding his/her talents and encouraging them! She could have taught many teachers many lessons and I am sure she did! What an amazing legacy to leave Signal Mountain! Every student on the mountain should have been lucky enough to have known her! Many thoughts and prayers and much love to her family and friends! She will always be remembered for her warmth, dignity, and beauty inside and out! Judy Niedbala

What a lady! Loved her so very much as a teacher, friend, and neighbor! My children still talk about her teaching them and how "cool" she was!! Ann, Bill, and Dorothy, my prayers and love to all of you during this time. My hope is that you will rejoice in knowing she lived a wonderful life and gave so much to so many! What a blessing to have such great memories of our many years as neighbors! Blessings, -Barbara

Our beloved Mrs. Leader. She was my teacher in the 5th grade and also had a huge impact on my education. Having left a private school at which I was miserable, I entered her class and began my love of learning. I have always described the experience as leaving Kansas and entering the Land of Oz! Decades later, she delivered a poem that I had written to my parents. What a dear person. Much love to all of her family.

Words cannot describe the impact Mrs. Leader, my 6th grade teacher, had on my life. She taught my older siblings a decade prior. 19 years of formal education...she stands out as my favorite teacher / professor. Mrs. Leader first recognized my math ability, she comforted me when my aggressive play at recess resulted in stitches to the middle of my forehead, the scar is visible 30+ years later. Mrs. Leader encouraged my love of history, politics, my admiration of historical military leaders, and interest in current events. She treated me as a young adult. And unlike many of my childhood teachers, kept her politics out of the classroom. She loved her students, made us behave, and taught us the old fashioned way. I loved her from the first day! God Bless you, Mrs. Leader.

AS A PARENT MRS. LEADER WAS A WONDERFUL TEACHER TO MY SON , AS A SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT I HAD THE HONOR OF BEING IN HER CLASS WITH ONE OF MY STUDENTS. THE LOVE AND RESPECT SHE HAD FOR EACH STUDENT IN HER CLASS WAS SO SPECIAL. HER LOVE FOR THEM WOULD SHINE AS THEY WOULD LEARN SOMETHING NEW. I CONSIDERED HER AS A SPECIAL LADY AND FRIEND.
