Obituary of Margaret Carter Trotter Lane
Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peggy Lane passed away on July 14, 2017 at the age of 85. She lived a blessed life and was a blessing to everyone who knew her. She was born in Chattanooga on October 27, 1931 to Charlotte Llewellyn Trotter and William Henry Trotter and into a family that has called Chattanooga home for seven generations. She received her education at the Bright School, Girls Preparatory School, which in 1995 named her Distinguished Alumnae, Bradford College (in MA), and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. A loving and dedicated mother, she raised James Jeffrey Franklin, Henry Trotter Franklin, and Charlotte Llewellyn Franklin, the latter of whom predeceased her, and was a true-hearted wife to Perry Virgil Lane, by whom she was predeceased, and stepmother to his children, Jeanne Lane Pehrson, Thomas P. Lane, and Jill Lane Dew. She is survived by eight grandchildren.
Peggy Lane will be fondly and gratefully remembered first for her joyous faith and her work on behalf of St. Paul’s Episcopal, First Methodist, and St. Timothy’s Episcopal churches and, secondly, for her lifetime of philanthropical work throughout Chattanooga, especially for the Hunter Museum, Family and Children Services, St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Metropolitan Ministries, and Habitat for Humanities. She practiced a faith that was inclusive of all human beings as equal in God, and she lived a tenacious commitment to the ethical responsibility of all people to better the community and the world. She was at once devout and a “happy heretic,” as one of her Bible-study groups was named, equally fierce and playful in temperament. She will be most remembered for her many lifelong friendships, for the relish she took from reading groups and lunches with friends, and for the smile that she chose to bring even to hard situations and that she shared with the many whom she touched. For those who wish to make a memorial contribution, the family suggests a charity of personal choice or the Trotter Scholarship Fund at St. Paul’s or Metropolitan Ministries.
Celebration and mourning will be shared at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wednesday July 19th, starting with visitation at 8:30am, 9:30am memorial service, followed by graveside service at Forrest Hills Cemetery for family and close friends.
Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 4000 Tennessee Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37409 (423) 821-7551
