Obituary of John C. Tugman

John Charles Tugman, of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, passed away on February 6, 2017. He was 67.
Born September 20, 1949 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, he moved in the early nineteen-fifties to Hamilton County with his family and became a resident of Lookout Mountain the rest of his life. Mr. Tugman was the son of the late Forrest E. and Helen K. Tugman, also of Lookout Mountain.
Mr. Tugman is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gwin Bader Tugman; son, John Charles Tugman, Jr., and his wife, Mindy and their daughter, Charlotte, of Lookout Mountain; son, Robert Fieldon Tugman, and his wife, Melanie, of Alpharetta, Georgia; a brother, David Forrest Tugman, his wife, Kathy, and their children and grandchildren.
Mr. Tugman graduated from the McCallie School, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.
Mr. Tugman worked in the banking and finance industry for over 30 years and was also very active with charitable organizations. He served as chairman of the Hamilton County chapter of the American Cancer Society and served on the Society’s state board. He held similar positions with the local Cystic Fibrosis Society. He was involved with the United Way of Greater Chattanooga, holding several positions including serving on the allocation committee. He served on the board of the Chattanooga Nature Center, on both the Parents’ Board and the Board of Advisors for the McCallie School and as chairman of the Chattanooga chapter of Ducks Unlimited. At Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, he participated as president of the Church’s parish counsel and men’s club, as well as being a lector and Eucharistic minister for over 20 years. Mr. Tugman also volunteered on numerous outings for the Chambliss Center/Children’s Home, and he assisted Allied Arts, Hunter Museum and the American Heart Association in fundraising events.
Some of the happiest times in John and Gwin’s life together were the six years John coached their sons in Little League and Pony League, and their going to John, Jr.’s baseball games at the University of the South.
The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8th, in Cavanagh Hall of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, with burial in the Church’ s Memorial Garden at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Chambliss Center/Children’s Home.
