Mom's Story
My mother had many interests. She loved to travel. Her travels included visits to Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego. She also visited Hong Kong, Thailand, Germany, and the tulip gardens of Keukenhof, Holland that she had read about as a child. Her sister Louise often accompanied her on the journeys. She and my sister took a cruise to the Bahamas. They took many pictures during the cruise, only realizing they had double exposed every roll when the pictures were picked up, trendy now, but not so much then. Both also excelled in taking pictures with the lens cap on. There were many great pictures taken we never got to see!
She loved to read. She read everything, usually aloud. She spent hours dissecting the mail. No matter how unimportant the mail was, it all got equal attention and sometimes, at the displeasure of my sister, resulted in a campaign contribution or the purchase of a product that just seemed too good to be true. She read billboards and TV advertisements. She was the play-by-play announcer for the latest news that scrolled across the screen or the election returns. She read your shirt. Lettering on a shirt seemed to attract special attention.
Sometimes her interest became a little more eccentric, like the time she decided that “flipping houses” might prove an interesting hobby or when she began day-trading in the stock market. Her longest lasting hobby was her coin collection. For a couple of decades, she accumulated historical coins, presidential coins, state coins, buffalo nickels, silver dollars, coins of all shapes and sizes. She only recently stopped her coin purchases after presenting grandkids and great grandkids limited edition silver dollars for Christmas.
But nothing compared to the love she had for her family. She spent most of her young adulthood on the baseball fields, softball fields and the basketball arenas. She gave so much of herself, soothing our injuries and nurturing our wounds. As time went on, the large gatherings at her house at Christmas time brought her indescribable joy. Those Christmas memories will live on with the grandkids and great-grand kids, but we all know that Christmas will never be the same. She always saw the best in everything and everyone. She never gave up on any of us. Never.
When my mother departed this world, she died a rich woman, not a wealthy woman but a rich woman. She was truly blessed with the family that she cherished. Our lives will never be the same.
Gary Leffew, son

My grandmother decided randomly one day that her nap time was going to be at 2:45 pm every day. One day she was sound asleep in her recliner, snoring… man, she was sleeping good for about an hour or so. Suddenly, she wakes up, sits straight up in the chair, looking at the clock… seeing the time is 3:00pm. She says, “Oh No, I’m Late for my Nap!!!”
Grandma always said the best time of day was bedtime!
Living with Grandma there was never a dull moment! I will cherish the memories, laughter, and love!

Every time I called, when she answered I would say, “Hello my granny.” She would reply, “Hello my granddaughter.” Every visit to her home she had either Reba on the Lifetime Channel or a Christmas movie – even in the hottest parts of the year – playing on the Hallmark Channel. I remember her spontaneously busting out with Christmas carols while sitting in front of an air conditioner. She used to tell me (a lot) about the story of the little lost duck she used to tell me, and how she wished she had written it down because she saw a children’s book about a little lost duck. I wish I could remember it so I could write it down for her. She was inherently strong, wise, and a safe place for us all.

Aunt Rett as she was know to us always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say.... :) I honestly did not know her real name was Loretta until I was older.
When her and mom would travel they always had great stories to tell of their adventures and it was nice to hear how much fun they had together. She will be truly missed but never forgotten and we will see again some day. Love and miss you Aunt Rett!!!

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Loretta?
A: My Sweet Aunt was always there for everyone. I remember the fist time I was shown how to make pancakes in a Tupperware cup. She smiled as my cousin Carol mixed the flour and eggs and milk. I stirred the top and Carol got all the flour from the bottom otherwise I would have had some thin mix. She was the one who my Dad waited for to be there to comfort my Mom when he passed. This is the Truth. The moment her foot crossed the doorway in the hospital he took his last breath. She was a great comfort to So many in our family and plenty of people who were not. She always had the right words or she just listened. My mother in law said when they were in school she was quiet and never was Ill with anyone. I can see her comforting girls in school. She had a Smile on a rainy day that made you feel the sun was out. Always a Christian she walked the words of Christ. We will meet again one day. She will be missed by So Many . This line of family comes to a close but many other lines will follow because she loved and lived this life.

I love you Mom. Thank you for bringing us up in church. It took me a long time to come back to it. I am so thankful I found my way, with your help, through the many prayers I know you prayed on my behalf. Our lives will never be the same without you. I promise to always live my life, being the best Christian I can be, always having the hope of seeing you again, where there will be no more tears. I love you, Mom.

I'll never forget that when I was a teenager I made her a really crappy tiny rocking chair for her birthday, cause I didn't have any money. I'll always remember the way she made me feel that because I made it, it meant everything to her and as far as I know still sits on the nightstand!
I love you granny, sorry I couldn't figure it out sooner
