Obituary of Barbara Louise Saben

Barbara Louise Saben, 84, who lived most of her life in Northbrook, IL, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2023, in Soddy Daisy, TN, where she resided with her daughter and family. Barbara was born on August 6, 1938, to Mary Jane Adair and Phillip Duncan in Burlington, IA. After graduating from Biggsville High School in 1956, Barbara went on to study business organization at the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana. She devoted her entire career managing law offices as a legal secretary. She and her future spouse, Gary Saben, grew up together in western Illinois and dated in their high school years. Barbara was valedictorian of her graduating class while Gary was salutatorian. Although they went their separate ways while in college, they reunited after graduating from U. of I. They married on July 10, 1964, and were happily married for 58 years. Barbara was a passionate, professional, and superior Bridge player earning over 10,000 masterpoints during her lifetime. She was very proud of her achievement of reaching Platinum Life Master status in 2022. She was a steadfast supporter of animal rights, even choosing a vegetarian lifestyle solely based upon her love of animal welfare. She and Gary adopted many canine and feline companions throughout the years. She also cared very deeply about nature and environmental preservation. Barbara was predeceased by her mother, father, and older sister Betty McBride. She is survived by her daughter Denise Svetly (Scott) from Soddy Daisy, TN, her grandson Aaron Svetly from Soddy Daisy, TN, and her younger sister Lynn Stokes (Greg) from Oquawka, IL. There are no events planned as she did not want to have a service. Donations in her memory may be made to animal welfare organizations or charity of your choice.
