We had the distinct pleasure of being neighbors with Mr. and Mrs. Tessman (I could never bring myself to call them Jerry and John even though they told us to time and time again!) during our first years on Lookout Mountain. They both welcomed us so warmly upon our arrival in 2008. I have the fondest memories of chatting with Mrs. Tessman in my front yard as she walked her beloved dogs through the neighborhood (always looking beautiful in her Van Cleef). She helped us pick out my wedding band when we got married, helped (thank goodness) my husband design the necklace he gave me when my son was born, and spoiled our son and daughter with Reed & Barton ornaments every year at Christmas. Tallulah, our daughter, adored Mrs. Tessman and loved going to visit Dayle May and peeking behind the counters.
Mrs. Tessman also gave me the best gardening advice I've ever received. I was lamenting my inability to determine what was or was not a weed in my yard, and she looked me dead-on and in her gorgeous voice said firmly "Kate. If it's in your yard and you don't want it there...it's a weed". I've never forgotten it, and it's served me well in all my gardening endeavors.
Our hearts are with Mr. Tessman, David, Ellen, MaryLillian, and John David. She adored her family, and her eyes shone with pride every time she talked about John David and MaryLillian.
