He was a graduate of the 1952 class of Notre Dame High School and the 1956 class of the University of Chattanooga - now UTC. At UC, he was President of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and President of his senior class. While at UC, he lettered in tennis playing for the team that went two straight years being undefeated. He also served as President of the Alumni Council in 1969.
He was awarded the Thomas/Chapin scholarship to the University of Cincinnati Law School.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
In October of 1956, he married his college sweetheart, Mary B. Hill (Mary B.). They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Jim taught school and coached athletics for several years before beginning his long career in medical device sales with Chattanooga Surgical, Durr Fillauer and retiring from Cardinal Health.
He loved to play golf and tennis and was a long time member of the Fairyland Club.
He was an avid reader and contributed many book reviews over the years and was a frequent contributor of articles for medical trade journals. In retirement, he wrote a memoir about his summers working at a resort in Lennox, Massachusetts with Mary B.
He was a long time member of the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain where he served on the vestry, as a lay reader, a chalice bearer and a Eucharist visitor.
Jim was a friend to many and was one of the kindest people you would meet. He had a great sense of humor and a great devotion to his wife and daughter. A final note he left for Mary B. and Holly:
The two of you are my life’s jewels. Bless you - I have gone Home!
He is predeceased by his parents, his stepmother, Sarah Effie McLain, his half-brother Lt. Colonel (Ret) William Carter and his brother in law and best friend Bill Roy.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary B., his daughter Holly (Marc) Harwell, his sister in law Carla Roy, his niece Robin Moldenhauer, his nephew Chris Roy and his cousin Bobby Lynch.
He had a special place in his heart for his friends at Memorial Hospital Cardiac Rehab with whom he bonded during his retirement years.
