Obituary of Marilyn Cross Doster

Marilyn Cross Doster, of Lookout Mountain, passed away on September 16, 2021. September 19th would have been her 91st birthday. She was born in Knoxville, TN and graduated from Knoxville High School. After high school, she attended University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she met her husband the late Stokely Doster. Marilyn was an avid competitive swimmer, training under an individual coach to try out for the Olympic team in the 800-meter freestyle. She qualified to train for the Olympics, but married Stokely instead. She was instrumental in starting the Fairyland Club swim team on Lookout Mountain, and she served as coach and assistant coach for many years. She was a member of the Woodland Garden Club, Junior League of Chattanooga, and the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. Her joy and love of music was important throughout her life, singing in the Junior League Choristers and her church choir. Marilyn was the daughter of the late Freeman and Jean Cross of Knoxville. Her surviving children are Dr. Stokely Doster (Carolyn) of Lookout Mtn., David Doster of Lookout Mtn., Merry Lynn Cato of Nashville, and Dr. Freeman Doster (Corinne) of Lookout Mtn. She has ten grandchildren, Stokely Doster III (Risha), Fritz Doster (Sarah), David Doster Jr. (Mary Claire), Zachary Doster, Chase Cato, Curt Cato, Marilyn Claire Cato, Freeman Cross Doster Jr (Caroline), Reed Doster, and Stuart Doster (Chelsea). Marilyn was affectionately known as Deedee by her grandchildren and their friends who all have fond memories of spending holidays and family pool time with her. She has six great grandchildren, Stokeson Doster, Collins Doster, Parker Doster, Stella Doster, Duke Doster, and Presley Doster. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery.
