Obituary of Gary Wayne Cross

Gary Wayne Cross Gary Wayne Cross, 73, of Soddy-Daisy, TN passed away September 13, 2020 at home with his family at his bedside. Gary fought a courageous battle with cancer for six years. Gary graduated from Morristown High School in 1964. He then joined the U. S. Marine Corps from 1964-1968. He was last stationed in Okinawa during the Vietnam War. He attended Carson Newman College from 1968-1969. In 1972 he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Gary had a long career in the Automobile business. He was comptroller for Ed Wright, his wonderful friend, from 1972-1982, comptroller at Ed Wright City Dodge from 1982-1985. Before his retirement in 2008 he was the CFO for Newton Chevrolet from 1985-2007. His happiest times after retirement were playing golf and riding on his John Deere tractor doing yard work. Gary was a selfless person who always took care of the needs of his family members. He was also the kind of boss who took care of his employees and helped them whenever he could. It was a life well lived. Gary was preceded in death by his father, John H. Cross, mother, Katherine H. Cross, brothers, Bobby, Junior and Edward Cross, sisters, Charlotte Carpenter, Betty Jo Anderson, Christine Smith, Mary Martin and Dorothy Lampkin. Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda, son, Brent and grandson, Austen. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews that thought the world of him. Our family wishes to say a special thanks to Hearth Hospice and especially the loving care he received from Amanda, Samantha and Sherry. A heartfelt that you to Les Jewell, who never failed to call every morning to let him know someone was thinking about him. Gary's favorite time these past six years was his weekly trip to Nikki's with friends, Johnny Spangler, Walt Melton, Bill Newberry and Les Jewell. Gary was a member of Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Graveside services will be held at Hamblen Memory Gardens, 5421 East A. J. Hwy. Morristown, TN on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. James Buttram officiating. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
