Last month I ran across a handwritten note from Carolyn and told my husband that I really should give her a call. Now both she and Jan are gone. It’s hard to believe, and I cannot imagine the family’s grief with this double loss. I will never forget Carolyn and Jan’s generosity in hosting not just one but two exchange students years ago. Among the special things that she did for the boys she hosted were taking one of them to hear the church organist and also providing colored pencils for the boys’ artistic expression and enjoyment.
In this last week, other memories have come back to me. Several times I told Carolyn she was as cute as a porcelain doll. I remember her talking about living in Ethiopia, and when I hear "Brown-Eyed Girl," I always recall dancing with her to that tune at a family wedding reception. We treasure these memories, and my prayer is that the family members will reach the point at which their memories are more pleasant than painful.
