Obituary of John Scott Ballman

John “Jack” Scott Ballman, 93, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 8th, 2020. He was a native of Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Chattanooga in November 1953, with his wife Peggy Lawwill Ballman. Jack and his wife were residents of Signal Mountain from 1958 until his death. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree specializing in Accounting. Jack became a C.P.A. and practiced public accounting in Chicago and Chattanooga for eleven years. In 1959, Jack obtained his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from McKenzie College of Law in Chattanooga and was admitted to the Tennessee Bar Association. In 1962, Jack left public accounting and entered the carpet industry. He served as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Jorges Carpet Mills. In 1977, he started Omega Carpet Mills, Omega Rug Works, and Omega Pattern Works. In 1999, Jack sold the companies and retired. Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga and served for many years as a Deacon and President of the Nell Davis/Steve Bevil Sunday School Class. In addition, Jack was a member of the Signal Mountain Golf Club and the Roseville Kiwanis Club where he served as Program Chairman, Treasurer, and President. Jack was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Leyla Ballman, his sister Ruth Hodge, and his brother Robert Ballman. He is survived by his wife Peggy, son Scott and his wife Diane, granddaughter Alesha, grandson Matthew, brother-in-law William Hodge, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, World Mission Fund, or Bible in the Schools.
