Obituary of Lisa Green Brock
On September 18, 2019, Lisa Brock died unexpectedly from a multi-system organ failure, brought on by a kidney infection and exacerbated by the cancer that no one knew—including her—lived in her body. Lisa lived every year, month, and day to the fullest, including her last ones, up until her last breath. Lisa impacted the lives of everyone around her: from her family to her friends to the greater communities of Chattanooga and Nashville.
Lisa Green Brock was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on June 3, 1965. After moving around to various states while her father Neil completed his medical residency, in 1976 the family took roots in Tennessee where Lisa lived for the rest of her life. First in Nashville as a high-school graduate of Harpeth Hall (’83), followed by college at Vanderbilt University (87’), then entering the training program at Third National Bank, where she met the love of her life, Charlie Brock. They then moved back to Charlie’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee where she gave birth to the three other loves of her life –Lesley, Taylor, and Laura Brock.
For many people, raising three kids and taking care of her first dog Fleetwood at the age of 28 would have been plenty of responsibility, but Lisa loved to be involved and have an active role in everything going on in the community. When Lesley, Laura, and Taylor started school at Lookout Mountain Elementary School (LMS) and later at Girls Preparatory School (GPS), Lisa served as the president of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at LMS and then assisted in planning various GPS fundraising events, which she continued to help plan until the time of her passing. After her girls left Tennessee, Lisa stayed involved in the school community, most recently serving as a board member of the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy, ensuring that girls across Chattanooga had access to education.
Lisa devoted her life to her family, friends, church, and community. She was incredibly organized, detail-oriented, and energetic, and she brought her talents and passion to countless community events over the years. Lisa had her own causes that she was passionate about but also ensured that she actively supported the passions of Charlie and the girls as well. She was a devout member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, serving as a leader and member of the altar guild for fifteen years and as treasurer of the Outreach Haiti mission organization. Lisa was a leader in the arts community, serving as president and board member of Association of Visual Arts (AVA) and helping produce the annual event 4Bridges Arts Festival for many years. She was also part of the Lookout Mountain Garden Club, the Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga, and the Chattanooga Junior League, where she served as Treasurer, VP of Finance, and Nominating Chair. In addition to 4Bridges, other events that enjoyed the “Lisa Brock touch” included GPS’s Visions, the Hunter Museum’s Spectrum, and Boys & Girls Club Stake ‘N Burger Dinner, plus many others.
When Lisa wasn’t tending to her many responsibilities, including taking care of the beloved “council” (dogs Zoe and Candy plus cat Velvet), she loved to exercise and was particularly devoted to her weekly tennis clinic, where she met many of her dearest friends. Lisa was also a big fan of traveling. In the last months of her life, she went to Argentina with her three daughters and hiked a portion of the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Portugal with her husband and close friends.
Lisa is survived by her husband (Charlie), three daughters (Lesley, Taylor, and Laura), mother (Lesley Green) and brother (Bruce Green). She was preceded in death by her father Neil.
Her family and friends are so thankful for their time with Lisa. She will be deeply missed.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 21st at Church of the Good Shepherd (211 Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee). Visitation will begin at 10:30 with the service starting at 12:00 and burial following in the memorial garden. Following the visitation and service, the family would like to invite all of those who knew and loved Lisa to the Lookout Mountain Club (1730 Wood Nymph Trail) for a celebration of her life. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Association of Visual Arts, the Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga, or Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy.
