.....she was lovingly known to me as “mizz carothers”.....almost like a second momma to me growing up...she let me hang out at her house....she gave me my first “pixie” haircut and perm...(i thought it was so cool that she was set up to do that in her own home, which was right next door)......she shared recipes with my mom, two of which became lifelong favorites and staples to this day: fudge pie....and eggplant casserole!....
...i loved the times the carothers parents got together with mine to play canasta at one of our kitchen tables...or to crank a tub of homemade icecream.....but one of the things i can still hear ringing in my hearts “ears” from those days, is her soft laughter that would rise almost like music from the middle of those gatherings....
....i don’t know if i’ve ever known a kinder, more gentle person........for my shy, but probably often annoying young neighborhood rug-rat self, she was always welcoming.....she was one of the few who called me “deborah”...(a name i wasnt always particularly fond of), but she said it in a way that, with her soft, pleasant voice and twinkling smile, made it sound almost beautiful......even when she frowned (which i can barely conjure in my memory), it was usually accompanied by a finishing smile....she was just someone that was simply good to be around!...
....it’s sad how we lose touch with the best people in our lives sometimes....i regret that i haven’t connected with “mizz carothers” more in recent times.....but memories of her and how she accepted and welcomed and influenced my life in such a positive way will always linger.....
....and, i’m grateful to God that we will both have eternity to “catch up”.....
....in the meantime, may God comfort the hearts of my friends, her beautiful daughters (jan, jill, jackie and julie), in whom i see soooo much of “her”....may your grieving be sweetened by many, many good memories.....
