Obituary of Evelyn Landress Chamberlain

Please share a memory of Evelyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Evelyn Landress Chamberlain passed away peacefully on December 15, 2018, five days after celebrating her 101st birthday. Throughout her long life, she was constant in her faith and constant in her devotion to her family and friends. Always ready to put others’ needs above her own, she will be remembered for her expansive capacity for love and for her beautiful, strong spirit, which touched the lives of all those who knew her.

Evelyn was born on December 10, 1917, the daughter of Thomas and Florence (Samuel) Landress. She attended Missionary Ridge Elementary School, Chattanooga High School, Girls’ Preparatory School, and the University of Chattanooga, now University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In 1938, she married Hiram Sanborn Chamberlain III, eldest son of Hiram and Emily (Wright) Chamberlain. They raised their family of five children on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Evelyn was a dedicated member of the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal) on the mountain, where she participated wholeheartedly in the life of the community for over seventy-five years and found a true spiritual home. She was also a longtime member of the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, and an active supporter of the Tennessee Camp for Diabetic Children.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, her sons, Hiram Sanborn (Sandy) Chamberlain IV and Thomas Landress Chamberlain, and by all but one of her five siblings.

She is survived by her brother, Benjamin Landress (Missionary Ridge); her son, George Ivens Chamberlain and his wife Beth (Sewanee, Tn); her daughters, Emily Chamberlain and her husband Spencer Lemons (Bainbridge Is., Wa), and Dr. Mary Ava Chamberlain (Dayton, Oh); her grandchildren, Hiram (Bo) Sanborn Chamberlain V and his wife Tamela (Signal Mountain), and Christopher Lytle Chamberlain (Sewanee, Tn); her great-grandchildren, Zoë Evelyn, Emma Caroline, and Hiram (Shiloh) Sanborn Chamberlain VI; her sister-in-law, Ann Landress; her daughter-in-law, Helen Chamberlain; her step-grandchildren, Jason Keith Lemons and wife Jeanie (Washington, D. C.), Emily Shrader Hauze and husband Andrew (Swarthmore, Pa), Charles Shrader (Philadelphia, Pa), and Adam Hawkins and his wife, Jennifer (Sand Mountain); her step-great grandchildren, Margaret Eleanor Lemons, and Glenna and Morrigan Hawkins; and her brother Ben’s adoptive Landress family.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Thrive at Brow Wood, Assisted Living and Memory Care Center, the caregivers from Comprehensive Care, and the staff from Tapestry Hospice for their loving care of our mother at the end time of her life.
