Obituary of Mayre Lou Bowman
Mayre Lou Jorges Bowman, 81, a resident of St. Simons Island, GA, formerly of Chattanooga, TN, passed from this life to her new home in Heaven on May 24, 2018.
Mayre Bowman loved Jesus, her family, her church, her country and her flying. Her priorities were in order. She was a great mother, a great and humble Christian, a devoted wife and a friend to many.
She was born in Chattanooga to Otto and Mary Jorges in 1936, and graduated from Central High School, and Tennessee Temple University.
She married Donald Bowman in 1958 and they had three children. They worshipped at Brainerd Baptist Church for many years, then at Ooltewah Baptist after they moved to Apison in the late 1970s.
Mayre and Don moved to St. Simons Island, GA in 1995, where they retired. They were long-time members of St. Simons Community Church.
Mayre is survived by her husband and their three children. Dwayne Bowman (Karen) and their children, Sawyer and Sydney, of Cornelius, NC, Dr. Donna Bowman (Noel Murray) and their children, Archer and Cady Gray Murray, of Conway, AR, and Dr. Douglas Bowman (Dawn) and their children, Drew, Caroline, Lucy, Laken, and David, of Blacksburg, VA.
Mayre was preceded in death by her two brothers (Edward and James Jorges) and a sister (Margaret Dupree), but is survived and will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Her great love and hobby was aviation. Having raised her children, she learned to fly at the age of 43 at the Collegedale Airport and flew her plane all around the 48 states and even to Alaska. At a time when it was still a novelty to be a woman pilot, she proudly held her own in the aviation fellowship, earning the respect of all those who knew her.
The family will receive friends at Wann Funeral Home (Chattanooga, TN) at 1:00pm on Wednesday, May 30. Graveside services will follow immediately thereafter in Forest Hills Cemetery at 3:00pm.
There will also be a memorial service at St. Simons Community Church on June 13.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Georgia Hospice Care Foundation, 151 Park Street, Brunswick, GA 31523.
Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 4000 Tennessee Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37409. (423) 821-7551
