As a young black lady, two years out of college working as a legal assistant for Chattanooga Legal Aid Society in Chattanooga and Legal Service Corporation as the S.E. paralegal trainer, Selma Cash was one of my "biggest" supporters. She not only encouraged me to go to law school, but insisted that I attend Cumberland Law School where she graduated. The reference letter she wrote on my behalf, I cherished and kept a copy of it for years! And even when I chose the University of Tennessee at Knoxville College of Law, she still gave me the support I needed as a "mentor" and "big sister". For this I always shall remain grateful. She felt there needed to be more Black lawyers and especially Black female lawyers. and I was the one she wanted to be a "Black Selma Cash Paty"! Rest peaceful, great woman, great lawyer, mentor and Big Sister! Love and appreciate you ALWAYS. Jean Howard-Hill jhh@howard-hillconsultants.com

My sincerest condolences to the entire Paty extended family. Charlie and I grew up together in Brainerd and his Mom always made us kids feel welcome in their home. I am truly saddened by the loss of such a great lady and true Chattanooga pioneer.

My father and mother, Ruth and Carl Drake were peers of Ms. Paty. I knew her children. While there are many lovely remarks I could make, let me just say that she was an outstanding role model for women. She was professional at all times in demeanor and dress. She was a fine attorney and a pleasant , classy woman. My condolences to her extended family. She will long be remembered and missed. Carolyn Drake Snider, Nashville,Tn/

Not many people say they like attorneys, but I truly thought the world of Selma Paty. She not only was a wonderful attorney in my divorce case years ago, she was also very concerned about my health as well because I was loosing so much weight. On more than one occasion, I called her at home because of issues from my ex-husband. She would always reassure me and make me feel like everything was going to be okay, and it was. She was serious about her job, but had a humorous side too. She will be missed.

I have worked with Ms. Paty over the last several years providing her realtime services. Even though she had a hard time hearing, she was still sharp as a tack. She was an amazing person and she is definitely missed. Pat Gildea

I had the pleasure of being one of Sunny's realtime court reporters for about the last ten years. She was the first attorney I had ever done realtime for and I was scared to death! She assured me that even on my worst day, she was still so appreciative because without my services, she could not hear! Over the years, she became so much more than a client! She was a dear, dear friend and I will miss her greatly!!!

Sonny was my dad's first boss straight out of law school in 1976. It is because of her that my family moved to Chattanooga. When my dad passed away I saw Sonny in court and she waved me over to her and struggled to get out of her chair. I insisted that she not get up but she did not listen. She slowly managed to stand up and simply grabbed me and hugged me and told me she was so sorry for the loss of my father. It brought me to tears. She was one of Chattanooga's fiercest legal advocates and she leaves a legacy that will last for generations. My sincerest condolences and prayers are offered to her family and loved ones.

I tried a number of divorce cases against Ms. Paty over the last 24 years. She was very committed to her clients. Our relationship was very businesslike. Then I was diagnosed with a rather serious form of kidney cancer back in 2010. I was rather shocked to receive the most beautiful and expensive bouquet of flowers delivered to my home as I was recovering. Sonny demonstrated to me that it was important to show kindness to the people you clash with as a lawyer. She taught me a lot. I will miss her. -Chris Clem
