Martha Carter Thatcher, of Lookout Mountain passed away on Saturday, December 7th at age 96. Martha was the daughter of Matt L. Carter and Nancy Martin Carter. She grew up in Chattanooga and graduated from Chattanooga High School and attended the University of Chattanooga. She was married 62 years to Richard C. Thatcher Jr. (Dick) who preceded her in death. Her brother Matt L. Carter, Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fl. also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Junior League of Chattanooga and the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain for which she served as President. For years she was co-manager of the Hunter Museum Gift Shop, a volunteer job she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities involving the Women of the Church. Martha was a talented and knowledgeable floral arranger and spent many happy hours studying the art of floral design and created beautiful arrangements for her church, her family and friends. She was also a wonderful cook, never more content than in her element of making a meal for a family or a dish to take to an ailing friend. She enjoyed traveling both in the States and abroad. She is survived by her sons, Richard C. Thatcher III and wife Marie of Lookout Mountain, William Carter Thatcher and wife Gladys of Barquisemeto, Venezuela and Atlanta, and Albert Garrett Thatcher and wife Nita of Rocky Face, Ga. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, Richard C. Thatcher IV (Suzanne) of Atlanta, Carter Everett Thatcher (Elizabeth) of Chattanooga, Sandra Thatcher Burnett (Mike) of Cumming, Ga., Christopher Thatcher (Maria) of Alpharetta, Ga., William Thatcher (Nathaly) of Norcross, Ga., Richard Thatcher of Barquisemeto, Venezuela and Hayley Thatcher Likovitz (Jon) of Richland, Ga. She is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation on Saturday, December 14th at Church of The Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain from 11am-12noon. A private burial will be held in the memory garden at the church.
