Obituary of Phyllis Moore Steele

Mrs. W. C. (Phyllis Moore) Steele, Jr. of Signal Mountain died on Saturday, May 9, 2015 in her home. She was born on January 27, 1927 in Nashville to the late Mr. Ira Edward Moore and Stella Doty Moore. She was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and ruling elder, and also served in Christian Education, Bethel teacher training and women's ministry. She graduated from City High School, attended Wesleyan College and graduated from the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was a member of the Junior League of Chattanooga, the Cotton Ball board and the Nifty Nomads. Mimi was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and loved her family immensely. She loved playing tennis, bridge and every kind of game with her grandchildren. All her family and friends treasured her grace, faith and many wonderful things that emerged from her kitchen. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dr. W.C. Steele, Jr. and also by her sister Elaine Elizabeth Moore. She is survived by her children Carl (Sue) Steele of Signal Mountain, Edward Steele of Nashville, and Beth (Carter) Newbold of Signal Mountain; grandchildren Rebecca (Evan) Gurney, Eleanor (John) Billington, Sam and Peter Steele, Nathan, Lucy and Stella Newbold; great-grandchildren August and Owen Gurney. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 13 at 11am at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Family will receive friends following the service at the church. Prior to the memorial service the family will have gathered for a private graveside service in Forest Hills Cemetery. 11:00 AM Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church 612 James Blvd. Signal Mountain, Tennessee 37377 Visitation with the family will be held after the memorial service at the church.
