My New Friend I wanted to share a story about my new friend Jerry Green. Four years ago, I meet Jerry through the local basketball association at one of our meetings. I was a new official and didn't know anyone at the meeting. I looked for an open seat at one of the tables and saw one in the corner. There were several seats open, so I took one on the end. The table had two other men sitting there, but not next to each other and they both looked to be veterans. Being new, I wanted to meet as many of the officials as I could, so I said hello to both and introduced myself. Each said hi but neither gave me there name. After several minutes of silence, one of the men asked me if I was a rookie. I replied yes and asked him how long he had been officiating. He said "longer then you". I wasn't sure how to take this so I smiled and began reading my material. Several other officials entering the meeting passed by and said "Hi Jerry". No more was said as the meeting began. When it ended and we got up to leave, Jerry, the man that had spoken to me earlier, smiled at me and said "Someday you will be as good me, but todays not that day". Through the the next couple of years I would run into Jerry a few times at games where I would be officiating the JV and Jerry would be doing the Varsity games after me. I would enter the officials room to pick up my bag and Jerry and his crew would be there preparing for there games. I would always say hello and once wished the crew good luck on there games. Jerry responded "After all these years I don't need luck, I'm good". I wasn't sure if he was kidding or that this guy just didn't like me. Two years ago I decided to join the football association and headed to the first meeting of the year, again a rookie and again not knowing what to expect. As I entered the meeting the first person I saw was Jerry. I thought here we go again. I looked for a seat and the only space open was beside Jerry, so I sat down. When he looked at me, I didn't think he would remember me, but he said "Hey there Rookie". Again I was a little uncomfortable and wondered what he might say next. Not much else was said and I sure wasn't going to ask him any questions. As a new or "rookie" official, the association sends us with different varsity crews on friday nights so we can learn. One week I was assigned to Bill Fairbanks crew at Howard High, which Jerry was the umpire. The crews usually will meet at a local restaurant for pre-game. Shortly after I arrived, Jerry walked in and sat down at the table. He looked at me and said "don't I know you"? I said I was the "rookie" and he smiled. I think at this point we became Friends! I really enjoyed this crew because they were all very close and seemed truly cared for each other. They would always have a good laugh at someones expense but always in good fun. I now could see that Jerry's comments to me were just like he did with his crew, all in good fun and he was accepting me as part of the group. This year the first game of the football season, Bill's crew was scheduled to do the Notre Dame / Grace game. I was asked to go as a extra official and I was more than happy to accept. We meet for pre-game and then rode together to the game. Shortly after arrival, the officals entered the field. The of the first duties of the crew is to walk the field checking markings, goal posts and field conditions. I saw Jerry walking alone, so I joined him. I told Jerry that I had been doing some Umpire work at some scrimmages and really liked it. His face light up. He then began to share with me all his "secrets to success" of the position. We really bonded and I thank him for the advise. Two weeks later, again I was asked to go with Bill's crew to South Pittsburg. I rode in a car with Jerry and two other officials. We joked, laughed and again spent the pre-game check together. In our conversation, Jerry found out that I own a golf cart business and he said he wanted to get one for his love, Myra. I told him to come by next week and I would show him some nice carts that I had just bought. On Tuesday the following week, he and Myra came by to look. We spent almost two hours together, some looking at carts, but most just enjoying there company. I could tell how close he & Myra were and that he really had a big heart and cared deeply for her. On Saturday morning I got the shocking news that my new friend Jerry had passed away. I know that I had only really knew Jerry for a short time, but felt a great loss. My heart goes out the Myra, his family and his friends for there loss is so deep. I will always remember my new friend Jerry for the friendship he showed me. He always spoke his mind and never cut corners, but when Jerry cared he really cared and showed it. I felt his friendship and will miss him dearly. And finally to the men on Jerry's football crew, Bill, Wes, Dennis, Joe, Donnie, Jerry was your friend, your colleague and loved all of you so much. I know you will miss his guidance, his laughter, and his heart. The "Rookie" Scott Lundeen

Jerry, I am just going to speak right to you. Crane called to tell me of your passing. What we did with the M&TE program at Sequoyah was truly unique. The program that we hammered out in those four years is in tact today. We both put in a lot of hours and took some licks but, it was your loyalty, your toughness, and your perseverence that held it together. We wrote the book. I will not forget your friendship and splendid character.

Jerry was one of the good guys! He always talked to me at every game we worked together as I covered games for Grundy County. He always had a smile. Always a laugh. Always a friendly face. Still can't believe he went in at halftime and didn't come out. Still can't believe that Friday's game was the first game I can remember where we didn't get a chance to speak to each other. Very sad about this. I know I've got some pictures of Jerry on my web site. Just don't know exactly where to find one right now. If I can find a good one I plan to print it and send it to his family. I sure will miss seeing Jerry at the games. David Lowrie

I worked with Jerry at TVA and will truly miss his smile and how he always took the time to say hello. He was always nice to me and we often talked about family. His face always lit up when he talked about his family, and you were loved very much. Remember the good times. My thoughts will be with you and your family during this sad time. Just remember that "Joy Comes In The Morning".

Jerry Green was my umpire for 7 seasons in high school football, but he was also my best friend. Many people knew Jerry but few knew the real Jerry Green. He was one of most caring and giving persons I've ever known. There was no limit as to what he would do for those in need. He also took his job on the football field very serious and at times pull some really funny jokes on me during the game. You never knew what he would come out with next. Jerry was a great person all around. I'm proud to call him my friend. He made me a better football official and a better person. I will truly miss my friend.

Jerry was a very giving Christian man. Some may not know this about Jerry, but he was always there to lend a helping hand when possible. Whenever we were together he always asked how our girls were doing. He was also quick with a joke, and when I would fire back at him he would say "Boy she's quick aint she." Bill and I will miss him terribly, but we won't be selfish. For we know that he is rejoicing with the Lord today. May the Lord wrap His loving arms of comfort around your family during this difficult time. You all are in our prayers. We Love You. Darla & Bill

Jerry was the umpire on my first high school crew when i began officiating. We immediately became friends and played golf together when not on the football friend. Jerry was a kind man and a great friend but he had that little temper that would flare up at times even on the golf course. He and i were very much alike in this way and i think thats why we bonded so quickly. I always looked forward to spending time with our crew on friday nights but especially Jerry. He kept the game light hearted when things were tough with his humor. He made my first officiating experience fun and something to look forward to every week. Jerry you are a great friend and will be missed terribly. I wish i could aggravate you one more time for checking all those butt pads. Bye dear friend.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jerry over the past 13 years as a high school A.D. When I met Jerry 13 years ago, I was a young, inexperienced A.D. and he took a genuine interest in me. You could tell that he took his job as a referee very seriously, and it was obvious that he had a passion for athletics as a whole. It was apparent, both in football and basketball, that he did it for the love of the game. My favorite thing about Jerry was that world class smile that he would flash each time he greeted you. He had the unique ability to make you feel like you made his day when he saw you. Even though I only knew Jerry in the professional setting of high school athletics, I, like most people that had a chance to know him, have lost a friend. I'm going to miss you man!
