Chief Shockley came to us at the Hamilton County Jail as a firm, fair and passionate man about the job he assumed when Chief Hart left. He cared enough about each one of us to come by each post when he had the time to talk to each one of us. He came to us like an Angel sent from Heaven, because he touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. I know that he back in Heaven with God at his side and is now looking down upon us Cancer FREE. God Bless the Shockley family and all those who lost a very special man. We all will miss him very much, and hope to reunite with him in Heaven someday! God Bless, Officer Gene W. Planer #2355

Deputy Chief Shockley was a very inspirational man for so many people. He is the best person I have ever had the pleasure to work for. He touched so many lives in the short time he was with the Sheriff's Department and that says alot about the person he was. He will always be in our hearts and never be forgotten. We will miss him.

Dear Shockley Family, I first met Richard and Herk when I was an officer with the Fort Collins Police Department. Herk was in records and Richard was working as a coroner's investigator. I worked more closely with Richard when I became an investigator. I knew when I went to a death scene and Richard was there I would always receive a smile and a hug. Richard was one of the first victim's advocates. He taught me to provide comfort and empathy to family members of the deceased at death scenes. He was awesome!!! I will miss his smile and his caring. I am very sorry. Sherri Wagner, friend and student of Richard.

Dear Shockley Family, Richard was a mentor and a friend. I worked with him in several situations as a member of Fort Collins PD, then later as Chief of Police at CSUPD. We served on several local committees, like Team Fort Collins - to address teen substance abuse. He was totally engaged in the needs of the community. My sincere sympathy in your loss. Donn Hopkins

I met Sheriff Shockley in 1991 when I invited him and Chief Hopkins to attend my POST Academy graduation. At the time I was a reserve for the SO and a student officer at CSUPD. Sheriff Shockley surprised me by attending. Later that spring he swore me in as a seasonal ranger for Larimer County Parks, and again surprised me with a comment to my co-workers about being confident in my training. That summer I ran into the Sheriff several times while working at Horsetooth Reservoir. I would stop and say 'hi' when driving by his house and he was working in the yard. Usually he would offer me a soft drink or water. One day while I was patrolling he 'pulled me over' and had me follow him to a picnic he was having. Even after I left the Sheriff's Office/Park Patrol Sheriff Shockley helped my law enforcement career 'behind the scenes'. Rest In Peace Sheriff and God bless you and your family. To the family of Richard Shockley. I was surprised and saddened to hear about Richard's passing. I am sorry for your loss. I worked in the Civil Division for Richard for eight years at the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. He was one of my favorite employers. I always felt he was too good and too honest to be in politics, but he did just fine. I remember when Hertha and Richard invited my family and me to their home just west of Horsetooth Reservoir for dinner. They were gracious hosts and it was, by far, the best German food I have ever eaten. I appreciated Richard's love for his family. He spoke often of his daughters and was "over the moon" when his granddaughter was born. He was a good man who lived a good life. It was a blessing to me that our lives intersected, however briefly. It is difficult to explain in words what this wonderful man has meant and done for me. He was a Captain when I was sworn in at the Larimer County Sheriff's Office in 1973. He was a supportive mentor during those difficult first "rookie years". When he worked for the Coroner's Office and I for the Fort Collins Police Department, we investigated some of the most difficult and trying cases given to law enforcement. His kinds words of support and big smile kept me going when times were rough. We celebrated together professional accomplishments like him being sworn in as our Sheriff; a job he held with high integrity and gained respect from the citizens he served. For over 35 years we shared such special events as family marriages, births and gatherings of good friends. We wept together over loses of people who touched our lives and of his beloved wife Herk. My husband, Steve, who also worked with Richard for years, and I were by his side when he married his new love, Jan, nearly two years ago. As we stood by his bedside this past Sunday in his home in Tennessee, strokng his white hair, I struggled to find words to say good-bye for this last time. He was one-of-a-kind, bigger than life. I am truly blessed to have known him and walked in his shadow. May God comfort those he left behind.

Dear Erika and Angie, Dennis and I would like to extend our sympathy, we are so very sorry for your loss. This last week we have been remembering your parents and the good neighbors that they were for us. We missed them a lot when they moved but did not think it really would be for ever. I am so glad that I got to see him last year and also meet his new wife. Losing parents are really hard and our thoughts are with you. Erika, we received your Christmas card and the kids are just beautiful and Jordan so grown up. Take care and please extend our condolences to Jan and the rest of the family. Fondly, Dennis and Eva

Richard was a kind and thoughtful neighbor with a cheerful disposition, and I regretted his move away from my neighborhood. I know he was a loving family man, and I will always remember his calling out in the evening to his daughters (one who lived with him temporarily and the other who lived next door) as they departed from dining together: "Good night, neighbors." I know he will be sorely missed by his friends and loved ones.

Fiercely loyal, uncommonly ethical, motivated only by his love for others and making the world a safer and better place for us, Richard was a gift to my life. He€™s provided Michael and me with so many happy memories. Angie and Erika, thank you for sharing your dad with me. His pride in Angela was evident at his wedding to Jan, both as he watched you in the crowd and when he spoke to me of the wonderful work that you do. Erika, you gave your dad the blessed gift of grandchildren, and he bragged of them during many phone calls after he left Colorado. Jan and David, thank you for coming into Richard€™s life. He and Hertha shared a rare love. To see him happy again at his Valentine€™s Day wedding and later, when you all came to visit in Colorado, was gratifying. David, I am sure you know that Richard was very proud of you and really enjoyed helping you with math! Richard enriched my life and will never be forgotten. I hope we all think of him and his unfaltering spirit when times get difficult. Even when faced with insurmountable odds, his recent response when I urged him to keep on fighting was a cheery €œYou know it, BCK!€ He may have lost this battle, but his spirit lives on. May we all be loyal to our friends, champion righteous causes, and work to make the world a better place €“ just as Richard did for us.

It has been my greatest honor to have become the wife of Richard Shockley and to have experienced his love. Richard is the epitome of a gentleman and has given new meaning to the word "Integrity". Each day we have been together has been a joy and to think of not seeing him tomorrow is painful beyond description. He brought peace into my life and kept it there until the day we heard the diagnosis of this horrible disease. As we searched, through his treatment provided by Dr. Jitendra Gandhi, for some relief for him, Richard never complained and said he "felt great" each day, although I know he did not. It was my great priviledge to care for him during his illness. To think of not seeing him tomorrow is breaking my heart. I describe Richard as a true gentleman. He was loved and respected by so many, as he loved and respected others. Each day was a good day with him. He loved David as though he were his own son, and the love was mutual. Thank you, friends, for your beautiful thoughts of this gracious man, whose first thoughts were always for others....not himself. David and I miss him terribly. Please stay in touch.

We first met Richard the summer of 2006, while he was on a business trip to California. We knew that he was someone very special. It has been an honor to have shared a few short years with this very kind, sincere man. Richard was a wonderful friend, a gracious man and a loving and caring husband who will be missed by all. Richard, Heaven is a more beautiful place with you there. Until we are reunited, may God bless and comfort those of us who are left behind. Richard Shockley has been a tremendous role model for children and adults alike, not only in his life, but in his handling of the disease which ultimately claimed him. The Bible says the last enemy to be conquered is death, and Richard conquered it valiantly. His wife, Jan, was a testimony to all who observed and heard of her steadfast loyal, caring and compassion for her dear husband. She was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 wife and Richard "safely trusted in her."

Mr Shockley was a wonderful man. He used to be one of my customers at CVS and he would always come in and ask how are you, how your family, give me a big hug and a smile to brigten my day. He would always joke with the employees in there and just make everyone happy. My father knew him better than I did but all the wonderful stories I heard about Mr Shockley were always funny or great. He touched a lot of peoples lives. He was always there to listen, he cared not only for his family but for his employees and their families. I will miss Mr Shockley but I know he is in better hands to where I want to be one day.

I first met Richard in 1969, when I was recently returned from Viet Nam and a fresh graduate of the Public Safety Department (PSD) Police Academy in Miami. I was out to save the world; Richard taught me that although this goal was unlikely, there was no reason why I couldn€™t find something to make better every day. His honesty, optimism, openness and sense of humor set the course for my police career and still echoes in my life. I only spoke with Richard a couple of times after he left Miami, but I still speak of him. He is the example that I always use when discussing the profound impact that a senior officer can have on a young recruit. He was a great cop and a great friend, and will be long remembered by those of us fortunate enough to have known him.
