Barney Morgan, 76, of Dayton died Thursday morning, Oct. 22, 2009, at his home. A former city editor for the Chattanooga Times, he held various posts with the paper in the sports and news departments. He became well known locally for his feature stories and popular weekly column. He left the paper to become an administrative assistant to former County Executive Dalton Roberts and County Mayor Claude Ramsey. He also taught English for several years at Soddy-Daisy Junior High School and Rhea Central High School. He was a graduate of Rhea Central High School and Carson Newman College, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1954. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Helen Morgan; son, Robert Green Morgan; daughter, Jeri Karil Morgan, all of Dayton; grandchildren, Jesi Morgan Robbins (Brad) Massengale, Morgan Ayn Robbins and Jamie Morgan McIntosh, all of Dayton, and Emily Grace Morgan, Crossville; great-granddaughter, Karilayn Massengale, Dayton; sister, Neva Morgan Hipshire, Dayton; brother, Clayton (Nanette) Morgan, Huntsville, Ala.; sister-in-law Nancy Morgan, Dayton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Dodd Morgan; father, Bruce W. Morgan; two brothers, Grady Morgan and the Rev. Wallace Morgan; and sister-in-law, Roberta Cover Smith. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, before a memorial service at 3 p.m. at Oxford Graduate School Chapel in Dayton, Tenn. A longtime advocate of responsible government and citizenship, Mr. Morgan had requested, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the organization Project Vote Smart, a nonpartisan campaign to encourage civic engagement and participation in public school K-12 classrooms across the nation. Brochures and gift envelopes will be available at the memorial service, or contributions may be sent to Project Vote Smart, One Common Ground, Phillipsburg, MT 59858-9767.
