James Willard (Jim) Bass III, 65, born July 29, 1944, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. A resident of Chattanooga, he was a 1972 graduate of UT Knoxville School of Engineering with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was retired from Combustion Engineering, TVA and later served as President of a local engineering firm, FBT Engineering. One of his many accomplishments was being selected Engineer of the Year while employed at TVA. Jim loved to travel with family Jim enjoyed outdoor activities with his family and was an avid tennis player and golfer. He was preceded in death by his father James W. Bass, Jr. and mother Betty Day Bass. He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Sandra Leffew Bass, of Chattanooga daughter Stacey Bass Patton, (Chris) Harrison, TN; daughter Karen Bass Smith, (Alan), McDonald, TN; son David Grant, (Erin), Harrison, TN; and daughter Wendy L. Oates, (Todd) East Brainerd . Survivors also include grandchildren Kyla Smith, Pierce Edwards, Dylan Grant, Logan Grant, Ryan Oates, Ben Oates, Corrie Oates and Cassie Oates. Nephew and caregiver Edward Buttram (Jamie), Harrison, TN. Several brother- and sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, October 16, 2009 in the Legacy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday and from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff of Hospice of Chattanooga and in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
