Obituary of Mary Lawrence

Mary Woolford Lawrence, 95, of Lookout Mountain, TN died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at her home. Mary was born in Chattanooga. She graduated high school from Stuart Hall in Stanton, VA and graduated from the University of Georgia. After college she was employed by the National Youth Administration and was field director for the Girl Scouts prior to WWII. After the war began she was a staff assistant with the Red Cross in Central Pacific. Following the war she was Executive Secretary of the Hamilton County Tuberculosis Association. After her marriage to Joseph Lawrence in 1951 she became an active volunteer with several local service agencies including, Junior League, Lookout Mountain Community Aid, Family Service Agency, In-As-Much Mission and Senior Neighbors. Mary was an avid tennis player and won a National Senior Women's title at the age of 88 Mary was a communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph S. Lawrence, Sr. her parents, Lena Abeel and Frank Rees Woolford; and two brothers, Ress A. Woolford and John Robert Woolford. She is survived by two children, Joseph S. Lawrence, Jr. of Lookout Mountain, Dr. Mary Katherine Lawrence (Dr. Arthur Klose) of Morehead City, NC; three grandchildren, Cooper Klose, Travis Klose and Charles Klose, all of Morehead City, NC and several nieces and nephews. A service celebrating the life of Mary will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, TN on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Lou Garcia officiating. The will be no visitation. A private burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery at a later time. It was Mary's wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to AIM Housing, 472 W. M.L. King Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37402; Episcopal Metropolitan Ministry, 1112 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga TN 37404 or Church of the Good Shepherd, 211 Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain, TN 37350.
