Obituary of Elizabeth “Betsy” Banks Stoneburner

Please share a memory of Elizabeth “Betsy” to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Banks Stoneburner, known by many as “BB,” went to be with her Lord, her husband and many friends who preceded her in death, on August 29th. She had just celebrated her 100th birthday.

“When in doubt, do.” This was Betsy’s response to any opportunity to do something fun or adventurous, and did she ever live by it. She was tirelessly positive, endlessly loving, selfless and never short on energy. She thrived on gathering people together, whether at a cocktail party for her friends or during holidays and beach trips with her extended family. She was a lover of bridge, a writer of witty poetry and a devoted wife to her husband Wes, a well-loved family physician in Chattanooga. They lived on the brow of Lookout Mountain for over fifty years.

She was unique and quirky, taking pictures of literally everything and keeping her jewelry in an electric revolving Timex watchcase. She ate rare steak and never exercised a day in her life. She also never worried, once musing, “There are no real problems.” She has left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her, and we would all do well to live a little bit more like BB.

Betsy was born on July 8, 1918 in Winchester, Tennessee to Will K. and Sally (Shook) Banks. She is preceded in death by her siblings Bill Banks, Shook Banks and Sara Stokes, her husband Wesley Harvey Stoneburner, and her grandson, Bobby. She is survived by her two children: her son, Harvey Stoneburner (Beth), and her daughter, Bitsy Hughes (Wearen); her grandchildren, Danny, Katie, Logan, Wesley and Callie; her great grandchildren, Jacob, Shook and Mabel.

The family offers their deep gratitude to the caregivers at Brookdale Green Hills Cumberland.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 1 at 11 am at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.

Donations may be made to Alive Hospice of Nashville, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37209 or the charity of your choice.
