Obituary of James Leo Hilke

James (Jim) Leo Hilke, 73, previously from Raleigh, NC, died Thursday, September 14, at home in Potomac Falls, VA. He was born October 21, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri to Norbert C. Hilke and Marcella E. Mueller. He married Catherine Ann Christnacht on December 29, 1973 in St. Louis. Jim received a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX, a master’s degree in Counseling from St. Louis University in Missouri, and his doctorate from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. After graduating from college, Jim spent several years teaching. He moved to North Carolina with his family in 1976 to attend a UNC doctoral program. After two years, he became the educational coordinator at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh while completing the doctoral program. He began private practice in 1980 and in 1989 formed Capital Area Psychological Services, P.A., where he worked until 2015 when he retired. Jim was active with the North Carolina Psychological Association (NCPA), where he served as president of the Association as well as co-chair of the insurance committee and president of the Division of Independent Professional Practice. He enjoyed photography, reading Conrad, attending theatre, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ann of Potomac Falls, VA; two daughters Christine M. (Leif) Emerson of Canton, Georgia, and Catherine M. Hilke of Arlington, Virginia; three grandchildren Robert James Emerson, Hannah K. Hilke, and Jamison C. Hilke; one brother Dennis J. (Cindy) Hilke of Sacramento, California; and one nephew Alex Hilke of Sacramento, California. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 22, 2017 in Mount Olivet Cemetery with Father Jim Vick officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org or the Project Enlightenment Foundation at projectenlightenmentfoundation.org.
